Dartmouth Middle School
The curriculum at Dartmouth Middle School’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program is progressive, with coursework focused on 21st Century topics, such as Flight and Space, Green Architecture, Automation & Robotics and Urban Engineering. Union School District wanted a building that is equally progressive, one that can serve as both a teaching tool for USD’s own students and an inspiration to other schools interesting in developing a STEM program. In collaboration with USD and the Project Architect, American Modular Systems (AMS) designed and built an innovative, energy-efficient facility that addresses the cross-disciplinary classroom and laboratory needs of STEM students, while offering flex-space for Dartmouth’s afterschool programs and club activities. Efficient production allowed AMS to expedite delivery of an advanced custom building—the first of its kind—by six months.
The Dartmouth STEM building represents the building of the future, organically connecting function and design through creative use of sophisticated technology, sustainable materials and cutting-edge features that improve performance and safety. Sliding glass NanaWalls give classrooms a connection between indoors and out, while providing ventilation, superior indoor air quality and extensive daylighting—pivotal to the building’s energy-saving strategies. Durable finishes include wipe-clean surfaces, eco-friendly tile and polished concrete floors that are stylish and modern, as well as low maintenance. Rooms called Fab Lab, Digital Playground and Media Room support project-based learning with floor-to-ceiling marker board walls and WiFi access. The building includes other high-tech upgrades conducive to a STEM education, including a green screen wall for videography and a 3D laser cutter.
