Top of the World Elementary School
Laguna Beach Unified School District / Laguna Beach, CA
Laguna Beach’s Top of the World Elementary has always been on the cutting edge of education, promoting student-centered learning in a progressive environment that gives children the freedom to explore their passions. To expand its STEAM programming, Laguna Beach Unified School District partnered with American Modular Systems (AMS) to design, build and install three new Gen7 permanent modular buildings that open to an outdoor learning courtyard. A 48×40 music building, a 48×40 double classroom building and a 36×40 classroom building with restrooms provide flexible lab and learning space for science, foreign language, arts and vocal and instrumental music classes. The open-concept classrooms are bright and airy, with high ceilings, skylights and large windows that bring natural light and outdoor views into a state-of-the-art space designed to actively engage young students.
Located on a hilltop between two canyons, the difficult-to-access site presented unique challenges. AMS worked with the local police and community to clear surface streets and raise power and phone lines to allow weekend delivery of the tall Gen7 modules to the remote campus. All three Gen7 buildings support the Districtwide energy-saving initiative, lowering operating costs while providing a healthy, sustainable learning space for students. Manufactured from environmentally responsible materials, the Gen7 buildings are free of harmful chemicals and toxins, reducing illness and the number of missed school days. High performance HVAC systems filter out pollutants, ensuring a continuous flow of fresh, clean air. A smart LED lighting system measures the natural light in each classroom and automatically dims interior lights to conserve electricity. It’s a warm, inviting, eco-friendly space that reflects the progressive spirit of the community and inspires creativity and ingenuity in its young students.
