West Elementary School

  • Project: Modernization and Expansion
  • Type: Kindergarten
  • Completion Date: August 2014

Project Background

The Hillsborough City School District (HCSD) needed to replace four kindergarten classrooms at West Elementary School. Facing a tight deadline, HCSD opted to go modular and approached American Modular Systems (AMS) to design and install an energy-efficient kindergarten building on the West campus. The school wanted a showpiece building that reflects Hillsborough’s community culture and pride, while demonstrating the District’s progressive stance toward education—all within a child-centric design that meets the needs of the school’s kindergarteners.

To give HCSD a healthy, high performance environment for its young students, AMS installed two Gen7 classroom wings, each with restroom facilities, and a shared staff workroom. The spacious open design provides room for small and large group activities, as well as active and quiet areas. A custom window profile integrates daylighting with design, aesthetically arranging kinder-sized windows throughout the building to give it a childlike sense of whimsy. A high efficiency HVAC with enhanced ventilation system reduces energy consumption and ensures superior air quality year-round. Recycled materials and non-toxic surfaces are low-maintenance and durable—equally safe for children and the environment.
